As Northern Ireland braces itself for another cold snap, home owners are being warned of the dangers of burst pipes from freezing water.

Falling temperatures mean pipes and tanks are vulnerable - frozen water can cause pipes to burst leading to a water soaked home.

Damage caused by leaking or "escaping" water from tanks, pipes, or heating systems is covered as standard under most contents and buildings insurance policies. Is yours?

Burst pipes are a particular problem at this time of year...

Will your insurer be there if the worst were to happen?

When homes are left empty burst or leaking pipes often aren't discovered for many days and damage can get gradually worse. The last thing anyone wants when they return from a week in the sun is to be greeted with soaking wet and freezing cold home.

Bad weather can cause other damage- storms, heavy rain, and snow are all causes for concern at this time of year. Check your policy wording so that your can be sure what is and isn't covered under your home insurance policy.

One of the main causes of freezing pipes is lack of lagging- anyone trying to do a bit of DIY plumbing, should bear in mind that pipes and tanks in the loft , or anywhere else liable to freeze, need to be properly lagged. Is yours?

Repair any dripping taps and don't forget to insulate outside taps in your garden or garage (turn off the water supply to them).

What to do if the worst happens
If pipes have burst, turn off the water at the main stop cock- by turning the water off you reduce the amount of water which can escape and minimize the damage to your home.
Switch off central heating and any other water heating installations at the same time to avoid further damage and open all taps to drain the system. Call an expert and then call your insurer.

While your home insurance should cover you for the damage caused by the burst pipe, it may not pay to have the problem fixed.
